I have a question for you, Reader
Are you skipping the legal stuff because you don't feel like you have something worth protecting?
Last week, I was sitting in a mastermind with two of my favorite local marketers (shoutout Omaha) building our Black Friday campaigns.
We were swapping ideas and I started explaining what we’ve been building inside the Creative Law Foundry™ and how we’re helping creative entrepreneurs actually understand what’s in their contracts, instead of editing templates themselves in a google doc (and second guessing every edit...)
That's when one of them looked me dead in the eye, and said:
"You know, I never felt like I had something to protect, until now. I probably need to update my contracts."
Dang. How real is that.
That one sentence unlocked something for me.
How many of us are putting off the thing we know we need to do because we don't feel like we're there yet.
Well, Reader, if I was your business big sis and not afraid to hurt your feelings, here's what I would ask you:
How can you expect someone else to take your business seriously if you don't?
At the Creative Law Shop, it's always been our mission to protect and defend your creative pursuits through affordable and legally sound resources. Because we believe when you are equipped with our contract templates and educational materials, you can confidently do the work you love, without the fear of what could go wrong.
Yet, so many creative business owners wait until something does go wrong before they come to us.
I truly believe this is part of the reason why: because it doesn't feel like there is anything to protect... until you're forced to realize it's in jeopardy.
Call it imposter syndrome, or the all-too-familiar feelings of not being enough...
Whatever it is, it stops here.
The truth is, if you are collecting money in exchange for your services, your art, or whatever it is you do... you are a business.
And you have something worth protecting.
(Even if you don't realize it, someone else might.)
So, here’s one easy step to start protecting what you’ve built: audit your contracts.
We’ve made it simple with our new, free email series: the Contract Confidence Mini-Course.
Each email walks you through your client contract one section at a time, helping you understand what each clause really means, and how to make sure it’s working for you, not against you.
Here’s a peek at what you’ll learn:
- How your first paragraph sets the tone for your entire agreement
- What your scope of work says about your time (and boundaries)
- Why “50% nonrefundable” might not hold up in court
- Plus: intellectual property, mediation, and more
There’s even some bonus contract language included.
Who’s the Contract Confidence Mini-Course for?
Anyone who is using a client service contract. Whether it’s from us, or somewhere else.

p.s. I've had the privilege of working with Paige since my early days of being a business owner (almost a decade ago now). But just because I've taken care of the legal side, doesn't mean I didn't let other things slide because, "I didn't feel like a real business owner."
From the Founders' Desk
A peek behind the curtain for our fellow founders
Right now, our team is actually building two versions of the Creative Law Foundry™ at the same time.
We didn’t plan it this way. When we started building our fully custom platform, we thought we’d be up and running within six months—new features, new design, and a smooth transition from our MVP to V1 (to use a little tech lingo).
But we quickly realized something: just rebuilding what we already had in a cleaner interface was going to take six months on its own. And that didn’t even include the new features we wanted to add.
So we made a decision.
If we wanted our members to benefit from those new features sooner, we’d need to build them inside the MVP first.
Call us crazy, but we’ve spent the summer improving our MVP and building our V1 at the same time.
Because we know it's not enough to have a contract template. You need a way to easily customize AND understand what it says.
